From an early age, feedback is an essential part of personal and professional personal and professional development.

Who doesn’t remember parent-teacher conferences at school, getting feedback from professors at university and then later at work? Feedback has immense power and impact in many areas of life, especially in a professional context. This power can have both positive and negative effects, depending on how the feedback is given and received.

Being high on learning approach, I remember the first feedbacks I received particularly well. Such as for example, the prompt feedback from my choir teacher when I auditioned for the lead singer in in ‘Little Man What Now’. Immediately after the audition, she said in front of the whole choir: ‘No, your voice is unsympathetic’. I still remember this to this day. Years later, working in consulting, I eagerly was waiting for my annual appraisal feedback which ended like this: ‘Nicole, you have received great feedback from everyone involved in your appraisal, we are totally satisfied and happy with your performance. You’ve integrated so well and are one of our high potentials internally. Unfortunately, we can’t promote you, you just haven’t been not been with us long enough’. What did tenure have to do with my performance, was what I thought.

Feedback is important for so many reasons:

1. Feedback promotes growth and development

Feedback gives individuals the opportunity to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. This enables them to work specifically on improvements and continuously develop their skills.
